Hannah Arendt on Pathological Political Associations

See American Secret Societies. Hannah Arendt died suddenly of a heart Attack in 1975, before she could finish her book The Life of the Mind. See Died of a Heart Attack at 51.

This talk was given in 1968 after the Columbia University student riots in April of that year, see from 10 minutes 55 seconds: "... and no-one would have dreamt of yielding to the reforms of Colombia University without the riots, ..."
The first protest occurred eight days before the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. [April 4th] In response to the Columbia Administration's attempts to suppress anti-IDA student protest [see IDA: University-Sponsored Center Hit Hard by Assaults on Campus] on its campus, and Columbia's plans for the Morningside Park gymnasium, Columbia SDS activists and the student activists who led Columbia's Student Afro Society (SAS) held a second, confrontational demonstration on April 23, 1968. [19 days after the assassination of King] ...

And there is a deeper current that was affected by this political climate in academia at the time: from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Forbes_Nash_Jr.:
But after my return to the dream-like delusional hypotheses in the later 60s I became a person of delusionally influenced thinking but of relatively moderate behavior and thus tended to avoid hospitalization and the direct attention of psychiatrists.
Thus further time passed. Then gradually I began to intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced lines of thinking which had been characteristic of my orientation. This began, most recognizably, with the rejection of politically oriented thinking as essentially a hopeless waste of intellectual effort. So at the present time I seem to be thinking rationally again in the style that is characteristic of scientists. ...
Nash developed work on the role of money in society. Within the framing theorem that people can be so controlled and motivated by money that they may not be able to reason rationally about it, he criticized interest groups that promote quasi-doctrines based on Keynesian economics that permit manipulative short-term inflation and debt tactics that ultimately undermine currencies.

  1. That first video is still available here: https://youtu.be/KLVaWPwlbaU and the link to 10 minutes 55 seconds is https://youtu.be/KLVaWPwlbaU?t=655 I don't know why the video was relocated. It makes me really angry when things like this happen. It also makes me angry that I cannot recover access to my blogs because google don't employ people to help their users, they only employ people to sell ad-clicks.
